The Romantic Side of China: Beijing

The Romantic Side of China: Beijing

As a honeymoon & romance travel specialist, I love discovering the sweeter side of destinations that aren’t typically thought of as romantic getaways. When I met with partner company Imperial Tours at Virtuoso’s Travel Week, we discussed one of China’s best kept secrets: it’s a perfect getaway for couples looking for a romantic atmosphere set within an intriguing culture.

All this week, I’ll be focusing on different cities in China and how we can turn an ordinary trip to China into an extraordinary one – big thanks to Margot at Imperial Tours for contributing in all of the blog posts this week!

Today, we’ll begin with an obvious choice, the capital of China, Beijing. Below are some of the city highlights, as well as suggested options for couples’ getaways here.

City Highlights

  •          Tiananmen Square – One of the largest squares in the modern era.
  •          Forbidden City – The largest imperial palace in the world.
  •          Great Wall – Built to protect China from predatory nomads.
  •          Summer Palace – A private retreat given to the Empress Dowager Cixi.
  •          Temple of Heaven – Location where the Emperor would go to mediate between the affairs of God and man.
  •          Hutong – Ancient alleyways of Beijing.

My partnership with Imperial Tours grants my clients VIP access into all of these world-famous sites, allowing for once in a lifetime opportunities, for example:

Imperial Wedding Ceremony on the Great Wall of China

If you’re like me and looking to check off all of the New 7 Wonders of the World from your bucket list, why not make the experience extra special with a private banquet? This event can be as low-key or as over-the-top as you would like it. Imperial will set up a white linen banquet in a secluded turret or less frequented section of the Great Wall. From there, guests have their choice of entertainment: Chinese drummers (think the Beijing Olympics but on a smaller scale!), lion dancers, Shaolin martial artists, or the more subtle option of traditional Chinese musicians. Depending on the kind of experience guests would like, we can even arrange for couples to wear antique imperial costumes. This kind of event is perfect for vow renewals, anniversaries, or for honeymooners to celebrate their recent nuptials!

Private Dinner on the Grounds of the Summer Palace

Certain sites mean even more when guests get to experience them after hours – just like the after-hours Vatican tour that we can arrange in Rome, Imperial Tours can set up a similar experience at the Summer Palace in Beijing. Imagine being the only two visitors in in this ornate building, so pivotal to the history of China. The after hours tour is perfected with an unforgettable dinner beside the beautiful lake, which can be arranged either within a pavilion or on one of the boats.

After attending Imperial Tour’s China Experts program last year, I’m able to plan vacations that extend well beyond couples travel: family getaways, foodie tours, history-centered itineraries, you name it. Fill out our Request a Trip form or send me an e-mail (lindsey@vacationsbylindsey.com) to begin planning your dream vacation to anywhere in the world!
